Scope and editorial policy The ENDODONTICS - CLINICAL PRACTICE, EDUCATION and RESEARCH (Ecler) aim is to publish via WEB articles concerning Endodontics specialties and other related areas, welcoming exclusively works that have not been published elsewhere.

|
|
Article classification The ENDODONTICS - CLINICAL PRACTICE, EDUCATION and RESEARCH (Ecler) will classify articles according to the following categories: a) Original articles - new information on basic, laboratory, clinical or applied research; b) Advertising articles - reviews or syntheses on established subjects, presenting a critical analysis of the related bibliography, and conclusions (in monographic format); c) Forum - reports on clinical cases, and presentations of new techniques and equipments; d) Theses abstracts; and e) Full theses.

Submission for publication All articles submitted to publication will be previously reviewed by two or more members of the Editorial Board, or by other ad hoc referees, specialists on the paper subject. Once a paper is accepted for publication, it may be subjected to a few corrections or alterations, which do not modify its style of language. Any changes concerning its form, style or interpretation will only be made upon prior approval. In such a case, authors will be responsible for article revisions. Articles not accepted for publication will be returned to the authors, accompanied by a written report from the Chief Editor or Assistant Editor. In that case, evaluation reports will be sent to the authors with no identification of the referees.

Preparation of papers Authors should provide 2 (two) diskettes containing the paper, accompanied by 3 (three) hard (printed) copies. Articles should be mandatorily presented both in Portuguese and English, or in Spanish and English, as well as typed using Word 7 for Windows. Illustrations, graphs and tables should be prepared in JPEG or GIF format, and inserted in the text. Originals of photographs or figures should also be sent; this material will be opportunely returned to the authors. All materials should be accompanied by a letter assigning exclusive right of publishing to ENDODONTICS - CLINICAL PRACTICE, EDUCATION and RESEARCH (Ecler), as well as pointing out the author who will be responsible for correspondence regarding the paper, including both personal and professional complete address, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers. The letter should also contain the complete names of all authors, and their respective signatures. For experiments, clinical studies or other works involving human beings or any part of them, the authors must assure that their work was conducted in conformance with the rules of ethical conduct by sending a report from the Ethics Committee, and / or a statement of responsibility signed by all authors. Style of presentation a) Word 7 for Windows should be used; b) Paper size should be A 4 with top and bottom margins of 2,54 mm, and left and right margins of 3,14 mm; c) All pages should be numbered consecutively in the top right-hand corner of the paper, starting from the first page, and including the last one and those pages containing photographs, illustrations, tables etc.; d) Articles should be formatted using font Arial regular, size 12, as well as paragraphs double-spaced with justified alignment. The size, alignment and space of tables, graphs and illustrations can be changed if necessary; e) Each chapter should begin in a new page; the titles should be typed in bold and capital letters, starting at 7 (seven) centimetres from the edge of the paper, that is to say 3 (three) double spaces (3 enter); f) First page should present in the top left-hand corner of the paper the classification of the article (original or advertising article, thesis, thesis abstract), followed by 3 (three) spaces, the article title and subtitle, full names of the authors, and their more relevant qualifications and affiliations; 3 (three) spaces, the names of the institutions and courses, if applicable, or the places where the work was developed; more 3 (three) spaces, the name of the corresponding author should be typed, including the complete address and e-mail; finally, in the last line, the month / year centralized. All that information must be only presented in the first page; g) Citations should be inserted at the end of the following pages, and should reference the author's surname, followed by an hyphen and the 4 (four) first words of the title. When there are two authors, both surnames should be mentioned joined with the & symbol. When there are three or more authors, only the first surname is mentioned, followed by et al.

Presentation sequence a) Article's title should be concise and clear to facilitate its classification (10 to 15 words, except articles and prepositions). When needed, the subtitle can be used, including an extensive one (first page). b) Authors' names should appear at the beginning of the paper; surnames should be in bold, as well as their titles and affiliations. Contributors' names can be mentioned at the end as acknowledgements (first page). c) Place where the study was developed and address for correspondence (first page). d) Article's abstract (second page) with a maximum of 250 words in a single paragraph should contain the paper's objective, the fundamental information on the methodology used, and the main results and conclusions. The following four sections should be typed in bold: Objective (s), Methodology, Result (s) and Conclusion (s). e) Based on the Index Medicus, a list of 3 to 10 keywords or indexing terms should be included; those terms will be used as a basis to bibliographical classification (second page). f) Article's text should contain the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusions. g) Acknowledgements. h) Bibliographical references. i) Appendix.

Bibliographical references Only references that appear in the text should be cited, and arranged in numerical order according to their order of citation. References of authors already mentioned should exclusively indicate the reference number, avoiding the citation of the author's name. It is not recommended to present different authors that deal with identical concepts; preference should be given to the author that has demonstrated the concept. Over five years old references should be avoided, except in relevant cases. It is not recommended to cite unpublished works or lectures presented in events. References should be accessible to readers. In the case of a paper already accepted for publication, it should be referred to as "in press", including the journal's title and year, if possible. Exceptionally, personal communications will be accepted. References should follow the standards presented below: a)

Illustrations Photographs, figures or graphs should be digitalized and inserted in the adequate place within the text, in such a way to facilitate their reading and understanding. All illustrations, including tables, should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their order of citation in the text. Originals of illustrations should be sent; this material will be opportunely returned to the authors. Illustrations should be marked on the back with the sequence number, author's name, and an arrow pointing to the top.

Measure standards The General Table of Units should be obeyd.

|
Abbreviations Abbreviations are not recommended, except those approved by the International System of Units (Weights and Measures), or those commonly used by medical publications, which must follow international standards traditionally used (as approved in the Montréal report published by the British Medical Journal 1979;1: 532-535).

|
Drug Names The use of trade names (trade mark) is not recommended; when necessary, the product's name should be presented after the generic name within parentheses, with initials in capital letters, followed by the symbol of trade mark in superscript (®).

|
Ethical and legal considerations The use of names, initials and hospital records of patients should be avoided. The patient should not be identified in photographs, unless there is a written consent of the patient accompanying the original paper. Tables and illustrations previously published by other journals or books should contain the respective references and a written permission from their authors or editors. Studies involving human beings should be in conformance with the rules of ethical conduct, and have the consent of the patients. The journal reserves the right of rejecting works which do not obey legal and ethical rules, as stated in the international guidelines for research involving human beings. This includes the work's prior approval from the Ethics Committee of the institution where the work was developed, as well as the patient's consent, freely given after receiving full information on the research.

Final considerations Footnotes should not be used. The appendix should be used to reference product's names and equipments, which should be arranged in alphabetical order. Printed copies of the paper, as well as the diskettes should be sent adequately packaged to avoid damages. Illustrations, mainly the photographs, should be packaged with impermeable material. When the paper is written by more than one author, there is the understanding that all authors agree with the publication of the work.
